How to Store Your Firearm Properly

How to Store Your Firearm Properly

It isn’t enough to purchase a gun and some ammunition and then store it on the top shelf of the closet to collect dust. That is not only bad for the firearm but it isn’t necessarily safe as well.  So, we are going to start today by explaining how to safely store your gun in a proper manner.

Proper storage of your firearm is as important as the purchase and training of that firearm.  You need to consider things like humidity and weather in your area. This is an important factor because a gun that is stored in an area with high humidity may actually rust and you definitely don’t want that. If you live in an area that has high humidity you want to protect your investment by purchasing a dehumidifier. They come in a variety of sizes and price ranges. You can even purchase one that will fit directly into your gun safe if need be.

The most important thing is that you put some thought into where to store your firearm.  People with children may not store their firearms in the same place as a person who lives alone.  There are all kinds of different devices to help you store your firearm - everything from safes, trigger locks, lock boxes to gun racks fitting in your closet to your bed side.  The options are endless for whatever your purpose may be.

You also need to think about where you are storing your ammunition. The same weather requirements need to be taken into consideration for your ammunition. It is just as critical that your ammunition be stored at a consistent temperature or it can affect the ammunition in a negative way, ruining it and making the ammunition unsafe to shoot.

Some people opt to store their ammunition away from their firearm as an added safety measure.  However, if you are relying on your firearm for personal protection, many experts would argue that isn’t tactically advisable. They would say that if a situation occurred and your ammunition was stored separately from your firearm it would take too long to reach both of them and load your firearm before the potential threat was upon you.

Trigger locks, safes, and lockboxes are also available as a safety option.  These, like the dehumidifiers, come in a variety of sizes and price ranges. All new handguns from factories sold in the US are accompanied by a lock of some sort which make them an economical solution as well as a way to keep children away from your firearm.  They are also known to possibly keep you from accessing your firearm quickly as well when that time comes.

As you can see, all locks and storage containers have pros and cons.  It’s up to you to evaluate what is the best for your situation. Once you have purchased a handgun and thoughtfully found a safe and appropriate place to store it – it is time for the next step; It is time to get yourself enrolled in a basic gun-safety course. In the next post we will be going over the importance of this and what you should look for in a good quality course so stay tuned.

Tip For the Advanced Shooter:  If you are a veteran in the gun world and you are like me, you are always looking for ways that you can quickly access your gun in the case of an emergency. This is one I came across- let me know your opinion.   If you have children in your home – I would not recommend this.
